volgtIn the past, there was hardly a castle park or stately garden in which neatly trimmed, low box hedges did not frame flower beds, and even in the traditional cottage garden, a common box was a welcome permanent guest. Even today, its popularity has not changed, for no one can resist the charm of the small, evergreen, glossy leaves. Best of all, the shrub proves to be an absolute all-rounder in the garden. Just as in the past, it forms a classic frame around a wide variety of flower beds, but it is also ideal if you are a friend of charming topiary shrubs. Spheres, squares, pyramids or an animal silhouette - a common boxwood can be willingly shaped into the most diverse forms. You don't need any extra training for this, just a good pair of secateurs. Are your fingers already itching a little? Then get yourself 1 metre of common boxwood, which we offer here in a practical pack of 5.
Feels at home in almost any location
Common boxwood thrives best in a sunny to semi-shady spot in a chalky, moist and well-drained soil. Regular fertilisation in spring is recommended, as is a sufficient supply of moisture. By the way, not only in summer. Even in winter, a common boxwood is grateful for generous watering after long, sunny frost periods. Pruning measures are ideally carried out at the end of July/beginning of August on an overcast day by cutting back the new shoots by about half.
Blends into any type of garden setting
This is a talent that not every garden plant possesses. As a globe in a terracotta pot next to lavender, sage and oleander, a common box spreads Mediterranean flair on the terrace. In modern, graphic gardens with a few selected plants, the boxwood will cut a fine figure in the gravel bed. Or perhaps you will soon have several box plants lining the garden path?
